Living on Lake Erie I have learned something ;may fly season is not to be trifled with. So many people have come here from out of town to enjoy the islands and our little vacation town. It’s beautiful and wonderful but it is absolutely invaded by mayflies.
It’s kind of funny because I grew up in Western Tennessee. I basically grew up on the lake and in willow fly season man those fish were bitten’ like you never would believe ;you could just throw your fishing line out there and I mean, BOOM -you’d catch a fish instantly! You could actually see the willowflies land on the water just real gently, you know they’re just flying along and life is good. Then that fish is down there at the bottom just waiting. Then that fish jumps up and grabs that Willow fly!
I’ve just been thinking about that moment when I was out fishing with my family and we’d be swarmed by those willow flies and it was kind of gross and it smelled bad , but it’s those kind of memories that comfort me on days when I’m feeling stressed. You know those little subtle memories that you have of your childhood; it’s those memories that are really really important when we’re adults . Those memories are really really important!
To all those folks who are out there complaining about the mayflies- I get it. We don’t even turn the street lights on here because they’re so bad and that’s a fact, but it’ll pass like all things- it’ll pass. Those willow flies are a wonderful. blessing to our lake. It’s a sign of a healthy ecosystem and a healthy Lake Erie so let those willow flies- mayflies( as they call em up here ) be, and go out and enjoy your life.
Don’t be afraid of life it’s beautiful. We gotta find beauty in everyday life folks- just to get through .
Hope y’all enjoyed my little story today. I hope you’ll share yours with me. I know y’all got some good fishing stories. I know too many fisherman out there from back home , so feel free to share your favorite fishing story I’d love to hear it and we’re gonna spread some joy today folks all while enjoying a nice cup of sweet tea or hot coffee, cause there ain’t nothing like a good fishing story to start off Friday morning as we head into the weekend.
